The idea

Etwas für + adjective halten is a neat formal way to give an opinion (ich halte X für sinnvoll). Support it with a fact in the passive (werden … gebraucht), then turn with allerdings to a condition. Könnten describes a risk as possible, not certain. Deshalb würde ich … introduces your proposal in the polite Konjunktiv II. Ending with a joint decision after a Probephase invites neighbours instead of telling them what to do.

Other ways to say it

“Ein Werkzeugschrank für alle wäre aus meiner Sicht praktisch.” – Neutral; wäre makes it a suggestion rather than a demand.

“Wir könnten doch Bohrmaschine und Leiter gemeinsam nutzen.” – Casual; doch adds a friendly, persuasive tone.

Watch out

“Ich halte einen gemeinsamen Werkzeugschrank als sinnvoll.” → “Ich halte einen gemeinsamen Werkzeugschrank für sinnvoll.”: Halten in the sense of “consider” always takes für. Learners use als because of “betrachten als” or English “regard as”.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: I consider a shared tool cupboard in the building useful.

Ich halte einen gemeinsamen Werkzeugschrank im Haus für sinnvoll.

“Halte … für sinnvoll” frames the opinion. “Einen gemeinsamen Werkzeugschrank” is accusative masculine, and “im Haus” names the place with in + dative.

  2. Put the words in order: abgesprochen / Allerdings / Ausleihe / klar / müssen / Rückgabe / und / werden

    Show answer or example answer

Allerdings müssen Ausleihe und Rückgabe klar abgesprochen werden.

“Allerdings” in first position adds a condition and pulls “müssen” into second place. “Ausleihe und Rückgabe” are the subject; “abgesprochen werden” is a passive infinitive.

  3. Write this sentence in German: After a trial period, we could decide together whether to continue.

Nach einer Probephase könnten wir gemeinsam über die Fortsetzung entscheiden.

“Nach einer Probephase” uses nach + dative for time. “Über die Fortsetzung entscheiden” takes über + accusative, and “gemeinsam” stresses a shared decision.
