The idea

Between housemates, du is normal. A considerate request gives the time window, the need (“möglichst wenig Hintergrundgeräusche”), the polite question in Konjunktiv II (“Könntest du … verschieben?”) and a limit that shows the request is small. “Teilnehmen an + dative” is separable: “ich nehme an einer Prüfung teil”. “Falls das bei dir schwierig ist” invites an honest answer, and “Bescheid sagen” means to let someone know.

Other ways to say it

“Wäre es okay, wenn es morgen von neun bis zehn ruhig ist?” – Casual but polite; good for a chat.

“Ich habe morgen um neun eine Prüfung und bräuchte eine Stunde Ruhe.” – Neutral; “bräuchte” is a soft Konjunktiv II.

Read the text

Tomorrow I will take an online test between nine and ten.
  • Für diese Stunde brauche ich möglichst wenig Hintergrundgeräusche.I need as little background noise as possible during that hour.
  • Könntest du laute Arbeiten in dieser Zeit verschieben?Could you postpone noisy tasks during that time?
  • Vorher und danach ist die Nutzung des Wohnzimmers für mich unproblematisch. Before and afterwards, use of the living room is fine with me.
  • Falls das bei dir schwierig ist, sag mir bitte heute Bescheid. If that is difficult for you, please let me know today.

Watch out

“Morgen ich nehme an einer Onlineprüfung teil.” → “Morgen nehme ich an einer Onlineprüfung teil.”: A time word in first position counts as one element, so the verb “nehme” must come second, before the subject.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: Tomorrow I will take an online test between nine and ten.

    Show answer or example answer

Morgen nehme ich zwischen neun und zehn an einer Onlineprüfung teil.

“Morgen” fills the first slot, so “nehme” comes second. “Teilnehmen an” takes the dative (“an einer Onlineprüfung”), and “teil” goes to the end.

  2. Put the words in order: Arbeiten / dieser / du / in / Könntest / laute / verschieben / Zeit

    Show answer or example answer

Könntest du laute Arbeiten in dieser Zeit verschieben?

“Könntest du” is Konjunktiv II of können, the standard polite question form. “Laute Arbeiten” is accusative plural, and “verschieben” ends the question.

  3. Write this sentence in German: Then we can look for another solution in time.

    Show answer or example answer

Dann können wir rechtzeitig eine andere Lösung suchen.

“Dann” connects to the condition in the previous sentence. “Rechtzeitig” (in good time) shows the aim, and “suchen” closes the sentence.
