The idea

Address the business with Sie. Thank for the offer (“Vielen Dank für Ihr Angebot zur Reparatur …”), give the reason (“Vor einer Entscheidung …”), then the request. Useful nouns: das Angebot (quote), die Position (line item), das Material, die Arbeitsleistung (labour), der Auftrag (order). “Aufführen” is separable: “führen … auf”. “Einen Auftrag erteilen” is the fixed phrase for placing an order. Close by saying you will decide after the explanation.

Other ways to say it

“Könnten Sie das Angebot bitte nach Positionen aufschlüsseln?” – Polite; “aufschlüsseln” means to break down.

“Welche Arbeiten sind im Gesamtpreis enthalten?” – Neutral direct question about the scope.

Watch out

“Mit dieser Anfrage gebe ich noch keine Bestellung.” → “Mit dieser Anfrage erteile ich noch keinen Auftrag.”: With tradespeople you place an order with “einen Auftrag erteilen”. “Eine Bestellung geben” is a calque of “give an order” and is not idiomatic.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: Thank you for your quotation to repair the shelf.

    Show answer or example answer

Vielen Dank für Ihr Angebot zur Reparatur des Regals.

“Vielen Dank für Ihr Angebot” thanks with für + accusative. “Zur Reparatur des Regals” adds the topic: zu + der, then the genitive “des Regals”.

  2. Put the words in order: Arbeitsleistung / auf / Bitte / führen / getrennt / Material / Sie / und

    Show answer or example answer

Bitte führen Sie Material und Arbeitsleistung getrennt auf.

“Führen … auf” frames the objects; “getrennt” (separately) says how. “Material und Arbeitsleistung” stand without articles as categories.

  3. Write this sentence in German: After your explanation, I will contact you with my decision.

Nach Ihrer Erläuterung melde ich mich mit meiner Entscheidung.

“Nach Ihrer Erläuterung” comes first, so “melde” follows. “Sich melden mit” means to get back with something.
