The idea

The key distinction is between asking (sich erkundigen, fragen) and applying (beantragen, kündigen). Formal German business letters keep these apart because a request can be treated as binding. Structure: Betreff with customer number, Anrede, the enquiry, the planned duration (“eine vorübergehende Pause von zwei Monaten”), the questions about period and billing, the explicit statement that nothing is changed yet, and Grußformel. Many providers offer a pause, others do not, so ask openly with ob instead of assuming.

Other ways to say it

“Ist es möglich, mein Abo für zwei Monate ruhen zu lassen?” – Direct yes/no question; ruhen lassen is the common phrase for a pause.

“Bietet Ihr Tarif die Möglichkeit einer zeitweisen Pausierung?” – Formal and neutral; fits gyms, streaming and newspaper contracts.

Watch out

“Ich möchte mein Abonnement für zwei Monate pausen.” → “Ich möchte mein Abonnement für zwei Monate pausieren.”: German has the noun die Pause, but the verb is pausieren. Learners often build “pausen” from the English “to pause”; that word does not exist in standard German.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: I would like to enquire about a possible pause in my subscription.

    Show answer or example answer

Ich möchte mich nach einer möglichen Unterbrechung meines Abonnements erkundigen.

“Sich nach etwas erkundigen” takes nach + dative: “nach einer möglichen Unterbrechung”. “Meines Abonnements” is the genitive of das Abonnement, adding -s to the noun.

  2. Put the words in order: Angebot / Bitte / eine / erläutern / Ihr / Möglichkeit / ob / Sie / solche / vorsieht

    Show answer or example answer

Bitte erläutern Sie, ob Ihr Angebot eine solche Möglichkeit vorsieht.

“Bitte erläutern Sie” asks for an explanation, slightly more formal than “erklären”. In the ob-clause the separable verb stays joined and moves to the end: “vorsieht”.

  3. Write this sentence in German: After your information, I will tell you my decision.

    Show answer or example answer

Nach Ihrer Auskunft teile ich Ihnen meine Entscheidung mit.

“Nach Ihrer Auskunft” opens the sentence as a time phrase, so “teile” comes second and the separable prefix “mit” closes it. Both “Ihnen” and “Ihrer” are capitalised as Sie forms.
