The idea

Separate three layers: observation (“der Karton war nass”), evidence (“ich habe … fotografiert”) and open questions (“Über den Zustand des Inhalts kann ich bisher nichts Sicheres sagen”). Use the Präteritum war for the state at delivery and the Perfekt for what you did afterwards. Adverbs such as deutlich and besonders make the description precise without exaggeration. Always give the Sendungsnummer (tracking number) or order number so the message can be matched; addressing the seller is often simpler than the carrier, because the seller holds the contract with you.

Other ways to say it

“Das Paket kam heute mit einem stark durchnässten Karton bei mir an.” – Neutral narrative opening with the separable verb ankommen.

“Die Verpackung war bei der Annahme feucht; Fotos habe ich beigefügt.” – Compact and factual; suits a web contact form with little space.

Watch out

“Bei der heutige Zustellung war der Karton nass.” → “Bei der heutigen Zustellung war der Karton nass.”: Bei takes the dative, and after the definite article der (dative feminine) the adjective ends in -en. Learners often keep the dictionary form heutige.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: At today’s delivery, the outer box was visibly wet.

    Show answer or example answer

Bei der heutigen Zustellung war der äußere Karton deutlich nass.

“Bei der heutigen Zustellung” fronts the time and situation, so the verb “war” comes second and the subject “der äußere Karton” follows. “Deutlich nass” stresses that the wetness was obvious, not a guess.

  2. Put the words in order: bisher / den / des / ich / Inhalts / kann / nichts / sagen / Sicheres / Über / Zustand

    Show answer or example answer

Über den Zustand des Inhalts kann ich bisher nichts Sicheres sagen.

“Nichts Sicheres” is an adjective used as a noun after nichts: it is capitalised and takes the ending -es. “Bisher” limits the statement to the present moment, leaving room for later findings.

  3. Write this sentence in German: I will associate the photos with the shipment number given.

    Show answer or example answer

Die Fotos ordne ich der genannten Sendungsnummer zu.

“Zuordnen” is separable and takes a dative object: you assign something to something. The accusative “Die Fotos” comes first for emphasis, and “zu” closes the clause.
