The idea

Frame the question as your own need (benötige ich, möchte ich … nachvollziehen können) rather than doubt about the colleague’s work. Zugrunde liegend means underlying; the participle sits before the noun as an adjective. In short requests German often drops articles in pairs (“Dokument und Stand”). Nachvollziehen means to follow and check reasoning. The conditional falls-sentence handles estimates fairly with sollte … gekennzeichnet werden. Close by saying what you will do next.

Other ways to say it

“Woher stammt die Zahl auf Seite zwei?” – Direct and short; fine between colleagues who know each other.

“Könntest du mir sagen, auf welcher Grundlage diese Zahl beruht?” – Polite du version; beruhen auf means to be based on.

Watch out

“Ich möchte die Zahl vor der Weitergabe nachvollziehen zu können.” → “Ich möchte die Zahl vor der Weitergabe nachvollziehen können.”: Modal verbs such as möchte take a bare infinitive. Learners add zu because longer verb chains look like zu-infinitives, but after a modal zu is always wrong.

Danach kann ich die Zusammenfassung passend ergänzen.
