The idea

Use the modal könnte (Konjunktiv II) with a participle and sein to state a risk without drama: könnte gefährdet sein. Durch + accusative names the cause. Then balance bad and good news: what is missing (liegt noch nicht vollständig vor) and what is on track (wie geplant). Jedoch marks the limit. The request asks for joint planning (mit mir abstimmen), which shares responsibility. Close with a promise to update (sobald …). Writing early is widely valued in German workplaces.

Other ways to say it

“Es kann sein, dass wir den Termin am Freitag nicht halten können.” – Neutral spoken style; den Termin halten means to meet the deadline.

“Ich möchte frühzeitig auf ein mögliches Fristproblem hinweisen.” – Formal opener that frames the message as a heads-up.

Watch out

“Der Termin könnte durch der ausstehenden Prüfung gefährdet sein.” → “Der Termin könnte durch die ausstehende Prüfung gefährdet sein.”: Durch always takes the accusative, even when it names a cause. Learners often switch to the dative because the phrase sounds like “wegen der Prüfung”, but that genitive belongs to wegen only.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: The current deadline could be at risk because of the outstanding check.

    Show answer or example answer

Der bisherige Abgabetermin könnte durch die ausstehende Prüfung gefährdet sein.

“Könnte … gefährdet sein” combines the Konjunktiv II modal with the state passive: a possible future state. “Bisherige” means the deadline as currently planned, hinting it may change.

  2. Put the words in order: abschließen / Arbeitsschritte / die / geplant / Ich / kann / übrigen / wie

    Show answer or example answer

Ich kann die übrigen Arbeitsschritte wie geplant abschließen.

“Wie geplant” is a short comparison clause meaning “as planned”. “Die übrigen Arbeitsschritte” are the remaining steps; the separable infinitive “abschließen” closes the sentence after kann.

  3. Write this sentence in German: I will report the new status as soon as further information is available.

    Show answer or example answer

Ich melde den neuen Stand, sobald weitere Angaben vorliegen.

“Melden” here means to report. In the sobald-clause the verb “vorliegen” stays joined at the end because subordinate clauses do not split separable verbs.

Use it today

A supplier has not sent the figures you need for Friday’s report. Write to your team: name the risk, what you can still finish, and ask for a backup plan.
