Combine 何 with a counter to ask for a quantity or number of occurrences.

The idea

Choose the counter for what you are counting: 何人(なんにん) for people, 何本(なんぼん) for long objects, 何冊(なんさつ) for books and 何回(なんかい) for occurrences. 何分(なんぷん) asks how many minutes; 何時(なんじ) asks what hour. The counter sound may change, as in なんぼん and なんぷん.
