Choose a test by first identifying who needs your result and what they require.

The idea

The JLPT has five levels, N5 to N1, and assesses language knowledge, reading and listening. JFT-Basic assesses Japanese for everyday life and is used for certain specified skilled worker applications. BJT measures Japanese communication ability in business situations. Check the receiving institution’s requirements, official dates, locations and formats before applying.

Examples

  • 私わたしは日本語にほんごを勉強べんきょうします。I study Japanese.
  • 試験しけんは七月しちがつです。The exam is in July.
  • 毎日まいにち、日本語にほんごを聞ききます。I listen to Japanese every day.
  • 仕事しごとで日本語にほんごを使つかいます。I use Japanese at work.
  • 学校がっこうで試験しけんについて聞ききます。I ask at school about the exam.
  • 友達ともだちと日本語にほんごで話はなします。I speak Japanese with a friend.

Read-aloud uses a synthetic Japanese voice available on your device. Voice quality and availability vary; it does not assess your pronunciation.

Watch out

A test name or level alone does not guarantee acceptance. JLPT does not directly test speaking or writing; choose an assessment of those skills if they are required.
