なくてもいい: saying an action is optional

The idea

Replace the final い of the ない-form with くてもいいです: 読よまない becomes 読よまなくてもいいです. The action is not required, although doing it remains possible.

Examples

• 窓まどを開あけなくてもいいです。You do not have to open the window.
• 宿題しゅくだいをしなくてもいいです。You do not have to do the homework.
• ここに名前なまえを書かかなくてもいいです。You do not have to write your name here.
• 切符きっぷを買かわなくてもいいです。You do not have to buy a ticket.
• 学校がっこうに行いかなくてもいいです。You do not have to go to school.
• 明日あしたここに来こなくてもいいですか。May I skip coming here tomorrow?

Watch out

Do not confuse this with てはいけません, which prohibits the action. The question form なくてもいいですか asks whether it may be omitted.
