Use these forms to say how an action happens. The suffix often makes a manner adverb from an adjective: sessizce means quietly. Learn aniden (suddenly) separately; it contains no -ce suffix.

The idea

Choose -ca or -ça after a ı o u, and -ce or -çe after e i ö ü. Use ç after ç f h k p s ş t; otherwise use c. Attach the ending directly, without a space or buffer letter. In a longer word, look at the adjective as it stands: hız → hızlı → hızlıca, ses → sessiz → sessizce. This page covers the manner use, not language names.

Watch out

Keep the final k in açıkça: the suffix begins with a consonant, so there is no change to ğ. Do not add this suffix to every adjective automatically: hızlı yürüyor is also natural for walking quickly. Learn the whole expression and its meaning.

Try it yourself

  1. Add the manner-adverb suffix to hızlı (quick): quickly.

    hızlıca

hızlıca: start from the complete adjective hızlı. Its last vowel is ı and it ends in a vowel, so add -ca without an extra y.

  2. Add the manner-adverb suffix to açık (clear): clearly.

    Show answer or example answer

    açıkça

açıkça: the final k requires ç, while ı selects a. The result keeps both consonants: kç.

  3. Add the manner-adverb suffix to sert (hard): forcefully.

    Show answer or example answer

    sertçe

sertçe: the final t is voiceless and the last vowel is e. Together they select -çe, giving the meaning forcefully or harshly.

  4. Add the manner-adverb suffix to sessiz (quiet): quietly.

    Show answer or example answer

    sessizce

sessizce: first build sessiz from ses and -siz. Its final sound is now voiced z, so add -ce, even though the original noun ends in s.
