You will name the seven days, say on which day something happens and ask what day it is.

The idea

The days are written with a small letter: pazartesi, salı, çarşamba, perşembe, cuma, cumartesi, pazar. For on a day the bare name is enough (Pazartesi okula gidiyorum), and for a repeated day you use her or the plural with günleri (her cuma, çarşamba günleri).

Examples

  • Pazartesi okula gidiyorum.I go to school on Monday.
  • Cumartesi sabahı pazara gidiyoruz. On Saturday morning we go to the market.Pazar means both Sunday and market. Here pazara means to the market; Sunday would be pazar günü.
  • Perşembe günü toplantımız var.We have a meeting on Thursday.
  • Bugün günlerden salı.Today is Tuesday.
  • Yarın cumartesi mi?Is tomorrow Saturday?
  • Her cuma sinemaya gidiyoruz. We go to the cinema every Friday. After her (every) the day stays bare: no plural, no ending.
  • Çarşamba günleri havuza gidiyorum.I go to the pool on Wednesdays.
  • Pazar günü işe gitmiyorum.I do not go to work on Sunday.
  • Haftada yedi gün var.A week has seven days. After a number the noun stays singular: yedi gün, not yedi günler.

Watch out

Do not add the locative as you would for a place: pazartesi'de is wrong, because a day is not a name and takes no apostrophe. Keep cuma (Friday) apart from cumartesi (Saturday) and pazar (Sunday) from pazartesi (Monday): the longer words come the day after the short ones.
