Change an appointment, a text or your habits: compare ändern and verändern, their overlap, reflexive forms and useful sentence patterns.

The idea
Ändern often describes revising or adjusting something, such as a plan. Verändern often highlights a different state or appearance. Both take an accusative object and both can be reflexive: etwas ändert/verändert sich.
| Pattern / form | German example |
|---|---|
| etwas ändern | einen Termin / seine Meinung ändern |
| etwas verändern | das Aussehen / sein Leben verändern |
| reflexiv: sich ändern / verändern | Die Situation ändert/verändert sich. |
| Formen mit haben | geändert / verändert |
Practise the supporting grammar before changing the people or tense in these examples: German reflexive verbs and their pronouns
Read the whole construction
You move a meeting from Monday to Tuesday: Ich ändere den Termin. Looking at an old photograph, you can say Die Straße hat sich verändert. Some objects permit both verbs, such as a text or a situation, with a different emphasis. Notice the reflexive form: Die Situation ändert sich needs sich, while Ich ändere den Plan has a separate object.
Examples
- Wir müssen den Termin ändern. We have to change the appointment.
- Ich ändere den letzten Satz.I am changing the last sentence.
- Die Stadt hat sich stark verändert. The city has changed a lot.
