These conjunctions connect words or main clauses without making the second clause verb-final.

The idea

Und adds, oder offers a choice, aber contrasts and denn gives a reason. Sondern corrects a negated idea: nicht rot, sondern blau. Each complete main clause keeps its own normal word order.

Watch out

Denn gives a reason without sending the verb to the end: denn ich bin krank. Use sondern, rather than aber, when correcting a negated alternative: nicht rot, sondern blau.

Try it yourself

  1. Ich bleibe daheim, denn ich ___ krank. (bin / ich bin)

    Show answer or example answer

    bin

Answer: “bin”. Denn links main clauses; the subject and finite verb keep ordinary main-clause order.

  2. Das ist nicht rot, ___ blau. (sondern / denn)

    Show answer or example answer

    sondern

Answer: “sondern”. Sondern replaces an explicitly negated idea with the correct alternative.

  3. Ich rufe an, ___ ich schreibe eine Nachricht. (oder / ob)

    Show answer or example answer

    oder
