Nicht can negate the whole statement or one specific element, and its position helps distinguish the intended contrast.

The idea

It commonly precedes a final infinitive or participle and directly precedes a specifically contrasted phrase. Possessives take nicht: nicht mein Buch. There is no reliable rule that nicht is always last.

Try it yourself

  1. Er hat heute nicht ___. (gearbeitet / arbeitet)

    Show answer or example answer

    gearbeitet

“Gearbeitet” is the past participle required after hat in Perfekt. Nicht stands before that final participle: Er hat heute nicht gearbeitet.

  2. Ich fahre nicht nach Bonn, ___ nach Köln. (sondern / aber)

    Show answer or example answer

    sondern

Answer: “sondern”. Sondern replaces an explicitly negated idea with the correct alternative.

  3. Das ist ___ mein Buch. (nicht / kein)

    Show answer or example answer

    nicht

Answer: “nicht”. Nicht negates this phrase or precedes the final verb part; possessive phrases do not take kein.
