Describe where furniture stands and distinguish its location from moving it somewhere. Notice this example: „Der Tisch steht in der Küche.“

The idea

With two-way prepositions, location takes dative and destination takes accusative: in der Küche, in die Küche.

Watch out

Not every movement changes the case. Ask whether the sentence names a location or a destination.

Try it yourself

  1. Wo? Der Tisch steht in ___ Küche. (die)

    Show answer or example answer

    der

„der“ — The question is where something stands, so use dative.

  2. Wohin? Ich stelle den Stuhl in ___ Küche. (die)

    Show answer or example answer

    die

„die“ — The furniture is moved to a destination, so use accusative.

  3. Mehrzahl: der Stuhl → die ___.

    Show answer or example answer

    Stühle

„Stühle“ — The task names more than one, so use the learned plural form.
