Two-way prepositions take dative for location and accusative for a directed destination in these spatial patterns. Identify the relationship, not just whether something moves.

The idea

Compare Das Buch liegt auf dem Tisch with Ich lege das Buch auf den Tisch. The first describes where the book is; the second describes its destination. Ich laufe im Park still uses dative because the running happens inside the park. The nine common two-way prepositions are an, auf, hinter, in, neben, über, unter, vor and zwischen.

Watch out

“Movement equals accusative” gives wrong answers. Running in a park describes a location; going into the park describes a destination.
