A neutral sequence often puts time before cause, manner and place, but German allows changes to emphasize information.

The idea

Keep the finite verb second in a main clause regardless of which element comes first. The TeKaMoLo pattern is a useful starting point for adverbials, not an absolute order for every sentence element.

Examples

  • Wir fahren morgen mit dem Zug nach Köln.
  • Sie geht heute zu Fuß zur Schule.
  • Ich arbeite am Freitag in Ruhe zu Hause.
  • Morgen fahren wir nach Köln.
  • Nach Köln fahren wir erst morgen.
  • Ich fahre morgen wegen des Wetters mit dem Bus zur Arbeit.

Watch out

TeKaMoLo is a starting point, not a fixed order for every sentence. If you move a time or place expression to the front, the conjugated verb still comes second.

Try it yourself

  1. Wir fahren morgen ___ nach Bonn. (mit dem Zug / der Zug)

    Show answer or example answer

    mit dem Zug

“Mit dem Zug” states the means of transport. Mit requires dative, so masculine der Zug becomes dem Zug. Der Zug alone cannot express this transport phrase.

  2. ___ fahren wir mit dem Bus. (Morgen / Morgen wir)

    Show answer or example answer

    Morgen

Answer: “Morgen”. The opening adverb takes the first position; the finite verb must immediately follow.

  3. Ich fahre heute wegen des Regens mit dem Bus ___ Arbeit. (zur / nach)

    Show answer or example answer

    zur

“Zur” combines zu and der. The destination phrase is zur Arbeit; zu requires dative, and feminine Arbeit therefore takes der.

Use it today

Build two new sentences from “Wir fahren morgen mit dem Zug nach Köln.”. Change the information in the first position, then check where the finite verb belongs.
