つもり: talking about your intentions

The idea

Put つもりです after the dictionary form to state an intention: 読よむつもりです. Put it after the ない-form for an intention not to act: 読よまないつもりです.

Examples

• 窓まどを開あけるつもりです。I intend to open the window.
• この本ほんを読よむつもりです。I intend to read this book.
• 宿題しゅくだいをするつもりです。I intend to do the homework.
• 切符きっぷを買かうつもりです。I intend to buy a ticket.
• 学校がっこうに行いくつもりです。I intend to go to school.
• 明日あしたここに来こないつもりです。I intend not to come here tomorrow.

Watch out

An intention is not a guaranteed result. 予定よてい tends to describe an arrangement, while つもり highlights the person’s intention.
