Use romaji input to build and check a short message in hiragana.

The idea

Enable a Japanese input method and choose hiragana with romaji input. Type kippu for きっぷ and kyou for きょう; doubled consonants and small ょ matter. For こんにちは type konnichiha. Confirm the composing text before sending; controls vary by device.

Examples

  • きょうはあめです。It is raining today.
  • あしたはやすみです。Tomorrow is a day off.
  • えきであいましょう。Let’s meet at the station.
  • わたしはげんきです。I’m well.
  • ともだちとえいがをみます。I’ll watch a film with a friend.
  • きょうはどうもありがとう。Thank you very much for today.

Watch out

The examples use kana throughout for practice; ordinary Japanese often uses kanji and katakana as well. The greeting ends in は even though that particle sounds wa; don’t spell it こんにちわ.

Try it yourself

  1. Choose and fill the blank: 「kippu」→_。(きっぷ/きぷ)

    Show answer or example answer

    きっぷ

kippu produces きっぷ with a small っ, not きぷ.

  2. Choose and fill the blank: 「kyou」→_。(きょう/きよう)

    Show answer or example answer

    きょう

kyou produces きょう with a small ょ, not the full-sized よ in きよう.

  3. Choose and fill the blank: 「konnichiha」→_。(こんにちは/こんにちわ)

    Show answer or example answer

    こんにちは

konnichiha produces the conventional spelling こんにちは with は at the end.
