Choose the word that makes the whole sentence coherent. These original A2 exercises practise reading for meaning; they are not official exam questions.

The idea

Read both sides of the gap before looking at the four choices. Find a concrete clue, try each word in the sentence, then check the meaning again. Words such as ama (but) and değil (not) can change which choice fits. Write the chosen word, not its position in the list.

Examples

  • Bugün çorba çok sıcak. The soup is very hot today.
  • Bu kutu tamamen boş.This box is completely empty.
  • Bugün otobüs çok kalabalık.The bus is very crowded today.
  • Bu bıçak keskin değil; ekmeği kesmiyor. This knife is not sharp; it does not cut the bread.
  • Sabah hava soğuktu ama öğlen ısındı.The weather was cold in the morning, but it warmed up at noon.
  • Bu kapı kapalı; diğer kapı açık.This door is closed; the other door is open.

Watch out

Do not match just one clue to a word and stop. In Bu bıçak ___ değil; ekmeği kesmiyor., the missing word is keskin (sharp): the whole statement says the knife is not sharp. Choosing kör (blunt) would say it is not blunt.

Try it yourself

  1. Choose from the four options and write the missing word. Çay çok ___; biraz soğuk su ekliyorum. (soğuk, sıcak, boş, yavaş)

    Show answer or example answer

    sıcak

sıcak: adding cold water makes sense because the tea is too hot. Soğuk would describe cold tea, so it would not explain the action.

  2. Choose from the four options and write the missing word. Kutunun içinde hiçbir şey yok; kutu ___. (dolu, ağır, boş, kalabalık)

    Show answer or example answer

    boş

boş: there is nothing inside the box. Dolu says the opposite, while ağır describes weight rather than whether anything is inside.

  3. Choose from the four options and write the missing word. Bu bıçak ___ değil; ekmeği kesmiyor. (keskin, kör, tatlı, kalabalık)

    Show answer or example answer

    keskin

keskin: keskin değil means not sharp, which explains why the knife does not cut the bread. Kör değil would mean not blunt and reverse the intended meaning.

  4. Choose from the four options and write the missing word. Otobüste boş yer yok; otobüs çok ___. (sessiz, ucuz, kalabalık, erken)

    Show answer or example answer

    kalabalık

kalabalık: the lack of free space points to a crowded bus. Ucuz describes its price and sessiz its noise level; neither explains the lack of room.

Use it today

For each answer, underline the clue and explain why one other option fails. Then write a new sentence with a gap and four choices; make only one fit the whole context.
