A shopping list is a reminder, so it does not need a full sentence on every line. Practise turning a purchase into a short entry that still tells you what to buy and how much.

The idea

Put one product on each line. Write the quantity first, then a unit or container if needed, then the product: iki paket makarna (two packets of pasta). For items counted individually, altı yumurta (six eggs) is enough. You can leave out alıyorum (I am buying). Here, write numbers in words to practise their spelling.

Watch out

Do not shorten away the unit: iki paket makarna counts packets, while iki makarna does not say that you need two packets. In these entries, keep the noun singular after the number: altı yumurta, not altı yumurtalar.

Try it yourself

  1. Reorder these words into one list entry: makarna / iki / paket.

    Show answer or example answer

    iki paket makarna

iki paket makarna: you need two packets, so iki counts paket; the product comes last. İki makarna would lose the packaging information.

  2. You need half a kilogram of tomatoes. Choose kilo or şişe and write the complete entry in words.

    Show answer or example answer

    yarım kilo domates

yarım kilo domates: yarım is half and kilo gives the weight. Without kilo, the entry would suggest half a tomato instead of half a kilogram.

  3. Correct this entry for six eggs: altı yumurtalar. Write the whole entry, with the number in words.

    Show answer or example answer

    altı yumurta

altı yumurta: six separate eggs are being counted. Altı already supplies the number, so remove the unnecessary plural ending from yumurtalar.

  4. Shorten Bir litre süt alıyorum. into a list entry. Keep the amount; write the number in words.

    Show answer or example answer

    bir litre süt

bir litre süt: removing alıyorum leaves both the product and its amount. Keeping litre matters: the sentence specifies volume, not the number of cartons.

Use it today

Write a six-line shopping list for breakfast and dinner. Include something counted individually, something measured by weight and something in a container. Check that each line tells another shopper exactly how much to buy.
