değil: I am not, it is not

The idea

Değil negates a noun, an adjective or a place phrase and comes after it: Bu çanta pahalı değil. It carries the person ending itself, and because its vowel is i the four endings never change shape: değilim, değilsin, değiliz, değilsiniz. In the third person it stays bare: O hazır değil.

Examples

• Ben öğretmen değilim.I am not a teacher.The ending goes on değil, not on the noun: öğretmen değilim. The pronoun ben may be dropped: Öğretmen değilim.
• Biz bugün evde değiliz.We are not at home today.
• Sen yorgun değilsin.You are not tired.
• Bu çanta pahalı değil.This bag is not expensive.
• Bu benim kitabım değil.This is not my book.The possessive -ım stays on the noun, and kitap softens to kitab-. The third person needs no ending, so değil stands bare.
• Onlar doktor değil.They are not doctors.In the third person plural, değil alone is normal. Değiller is also possible, mostly when people are meant: Onlar doktor değiller.
• Bu kahve sıcak değil, soğuk.This coffee is not hot, it is cold.
• değilimI am notdeğil·im-im / -sin / -iz / -siniz: I am, you are, we are
• değilizwe are notdeğil·iz-im / -sin / -iz / -siniz: I am, you are, we are

Watch out

Do not leave the ending on the noun: Öğretmenim değil does not mean 'I am not a teacher' but 'he is not my teacher'. Say Öğretmen değilim. And a verb is not negated with değil but inside the verb with -me/-ma: gelmiyorum.
