At B2, use context to recognise familiar words behind a regional pronunciation. No recording is attached: the written pairs practise sound contrasts, not an imitation of an entire accent.

The idea

Treat a sound difference as a clue, then check the meaning and recover the standard spelling. Standard Turkish is based on Istanbul speech; this does not mean everyone in Istanbul speaks alike. Some northeastern Black Sea varieties unround vowels. In the standard pair kül / kil (ash / clay), keep the tongue forward but round the lips for ü, not i. Muğla speech in the Aegean includes voicing of initial k: listen for vibration rather than assuming a new word. Compare standard kaz / gaz (goose / gas). In Urfa speech in the southeast, written k can correspond to a fricative, with audible friction instead of a complete closure, as in the regional counterpart of yok. These are local patterns, not rules for every speaker in those regions.

  • Bu kapı zor açılıyor. This door is hard to open.
  • Kül rüzgârda etrafa savruldu.Ash scattered around in the wind.

  • külash
  • kilclay

Watch out

Do not automatically replace every i with ü or every g with k. In standard Turkish, kil and kül, and gaz and kaz, are different words. Context helps distinguish a regional realisation from a different word; one sound cannot establish someone’s hometown.

Try it yourself

  1. Choose the standard word for the residue after burning: kül or kil.

    Show answer or example answer

    kül

kül: the residue after burning is ash, whereas kil is clay. The meaning selects ü in standard spelling even if a speaker’s vowel sounds less rounded.

  2. A Muğla speaker uses a voiced initial sound in the word meaning “door”. Write the standard Turkish word.

    Show answer or example answer

    kapı

kapı: a door is intended. A voiced initial consonant in this regional pronunciation does not turn the standard spelling into a word beginning with g.

  3. Complete in standard spelling: Bu odada ışık ___. There is no light, even if the final consonant is pronounced with friction in regional speech.

    Show answer or example answer

    yok

yok: the sentence denies the presence of light. Regional friction at the end does not replace written k with h in standard spelling.

  4. Can one sound feature identify a speaker’s city with certainty? Answer evet or hayır.

    Show answer or example answer

    hayır

hayır: the same sound feature can occur in more than one place, and speakers vary within a region. A single cue cannot identify a city.

Use it today

Say kül / kil and kaz / gaz, noticing lip rounding and voicing. Then underline kapı, kül and yok in the sentences. Explain which sound could vary and why the standard spelling stays. Do not assign a town from these sentences alone.
