Use this construction when one degree changes along with another: more practice and greater confidence, for example. The two parts can increase together or move in opposite directions.

The idea

Je plus a comparative introduces a subordinate clause with its finite verb last. Desto or umso plus a comparative opens the main clause; its finite verb follows that whole opening phrase.

Patterns to compare
ConstructionGerman example
je + Komparativ + ... + VerbJe genauer du liest, ...
desto/umso + Komparativ + Verb + ...... desto mehr verstehst du.
gut → besser / viel → mehrJe besser ... , desto mehr ...
wenig → weniger / gern → lieberJe weniger ... , desto lieber ...

Build and check both clauses

Start with Ich übe mehr and Ich spreche besser. Move the first comparative behind je, then move übe to the end: Je mehr ich übe. Place desto besser at the front of the second clause, followed by spreche ich, and separate the clauses with a comma. The construction expresses a linked change, not a fixed numerical ratio or scientific proof that one thing causes another.

Examples

  • Je öfter ich die Wörter benutze, desto leichter merke ich sie mir.The more often I use the words, the more easily I remember them.
  • Je früher wir losfahren, desto weniger Verkehr gibt es.The earlier we leave, the less traffic there is.
  • Je länger die Schlange wird, desto ungeduldiger werden die Kunden. The longer the queue gets, the more impatient the customers become.
  • Je mehr du übst, umso flüssiger sprichst du.The more you practise, the more fluently you speak.
  • Je weniger Gepäck wir mitnehmen, desto leichter reisen wir.The less luggage we take, the more easily we travel.
  • Je genauer die Beschreibung ist, desto schneller finde ich das Haus. The more precise the description is, the faster I find the house.

Watch out

Do not keep the adjective in its basic form: sicher becomes sicherer, gut becomes besser. Desto mehr Plätze is one opening phrase, not three separate word-order positions.

Try it yourself

  1. Je öfter du übst, desto ___ wirst du. (sicher)

    Show answer or example answer

    sicherer

Sicherer is the comparative of sicher. The paired construction compares degrees of confidence.

  2. Ordne: Je mehr / ich / übe, / desto besser / spreche / ich.

    Show answer or example answer

Je mehr ich übe, desto besser spreche ich.

Übe closes the je clause. Desto besser is the first unit of the main clause, so spreche comes before ich.

  3. Ersetze desto: Je früher wir kommen, ___ mehr Plätze sind frei.

    Show answer or example answer

    umso

Umso is the usual alternative to desto here. Keep the comparative and the same verb position.

  4. Je weniger Gepäck wir mitnehmen, desto leichter reisen wir. Was nimmt ab? (Gepäck / Leichtigkeit)

    Show answer or example answer

    Gepäck

Weniger reduces the amount of luggage. Leichter describes increased ease: the two directions need not both be upward.

Use it today

Write one relationship about learning and one about travel. Make one use mehr and the other weniger. Circle the comparative groups and underline each finite verb.
