Use the contrasts below to connect spelling, mouth movement and meaning. Start slowly, compare complete words and then use the target sound in a short sentence.

The idea

Compare vowel duration and vowel quality, not duration alone. In stressed syllables, double consonant spelling often signals a preceding short vowel; use dictionary audio when spelling is uncertain.

Watch out

Written letters and spoken sounds are not interchangeable. Optional synthetic speech may not render isolated IPA, emphasis or contrasts accurately. Compare a reliable spoken model and keep the surrounding word in view.

Try it yourself

  1. Welches Wort hat ein langes a: Staat oder Stadt?

    Show answer or example answer

    Staat hat ein langes [aː].

Staat contains long [aː], whereas Stadt has short [a].

  2. Welches Wort enthält ein kurzes i: bieten oder bitten?

    Show answer or example answer

    Bitten enthält ein kurzes [ɪ].

Bitten has short [ɪ]; bieten has long [iː].

  3. Ist bei bieten und bitten nur die Dauer verschieden?

    Show answer or example answer

Nein, auch die Vokalqualität unterscheidet sich: [iː] und [ɪ].

The tongue position and vowel quality also differ, so merely lengthening bitten is insufficient.
