A relative clause adds information about a noun and places its conjugated verb at the end.

The idea

The antecedent supplies gender and number, but the pronoun's role inside the relative clause determines case. Compare der Mann, der kommt with der Mann, den ich sehe.

Watch out

The relative pronoun does not simply copy the case of its antecedent. In die Frau, der ich helfe, der is dative because helfen requires a dative complement inside the relative clause.
