JLPT N1: format and official resources

The idea

N1 combines language knowledge and reading in 110 minutes, followed by about 55 minutes of listening. Passing requires 100/180 overall and at least 19/60 in each scoring section: language knowledge, reading and listening. Consult the official site for current arrangements and samples. 踏まえて takes a condition into account; 一方で contrasts developments; からといって rejects an unwarranted conclusion.

Examples

• 計画けいかくは予算よさんの制約せいやくを踏ふまえて、見直みなおす必要ひつようがあります。The plan must be revised considering budget constraints.
• 結果けっかだけでなく、過程かていも評価ひょうかすべきです。We should evaluate the process as well as the result.
• 資料しりょうには、この説せつを支持しじする根拠こんきょがほとんどありません。The documents provide little evidence for this theory.
• 便利べんりになった一方いっぽうで、新あらたな問題もんだいも生しょうじています。Things are more convenient, but new problems have arisen.
• 担当者たんとうしゃは変更へんこうの理由りゆうを説明せつめいしませんでした。The person in charge did not explain the reason for the change.
• 意見いけんが異ことなるからといって、対話たいわをやめるべきではありません。We should not stop talking just because opinions differ.

Watch out

Speaking and writing are not tested directly, and no official vocabulary or kanji list is published. A high total cannot compensate for a section below its minimum.
