ました: polite past verbs

The idea

Replace ます with ました to report a past event: 見ます becomes 見ました. The same ending works for different verb classes. For a negative past, add でした to ません: 食べません becomes 食べませんでした. A time word such as 昨日 helps place the event.

Examples

• 昨日きのう、友達ともだちと公園こうえんへ行いきました。Yesterday I went to the park with a friend.
• 朝あさ、パンを食たべました。I ate bread this morning.
• 日曜日にちようびに家いえで映画えいがを見みました。On Sunday I watched a film at home.
• 先週せんしゅう、新あたらしい本ほんを買かいました。Last week I bought a new book.
• 昨日きのうは電車でんしゃに乗のりませんでした。I did not take the train yesterday.
• 田中たなかさんは日本語にほんごを勉強べんきょうしました。Tanaka studied Japanese.

Watch out

Do not use ました for every future event. The non-past ます can express a future action when the context or time word makes it clear.
