Watch out

Here, 研究 means “research; to research with する”; 究めたい means “wants to master or investigate thoroughly”. Compare 研究 (けんきゅう) and 究めたい (きわめたい) in context: “I research Japanese history.” and “He wants to master the art of tea.” The same character does not make the words interchangeable. Compare the shapes of 究 and 空 as well.
