You will build the everyday forms of çanta: my bag, the bag as an object, in his or her bag, and put the endings in the right order.
The idea
çanta ends in the vowel a, so the possessives lose their vowel: çantam (my), çantan (your), çantamız (our), çantanız (your, plural or polite) and çantası (his, her, its). A case ending always comes after the possessive: çantamda (in my bag), çantama (to my bag). After -sı the case ending takes an n: çantasında, çantasına. Without a possessive, an ending that starts with a vowel needs a y: çantayı, çantaya.
| Ending | Form | Joining sound |
|---|---|---|
| - | çanta | — |
| -lar | çantalar | — |
| -yı | çantayı | y |
| -ya | çantaya | y |
| -da | çantada | — |
| -dan | çantadan | — |
| -nın | çantanın | n |
| -m | çantam | — |
| -n | çantan | — |
| -sı | çantası | s |
| -mız | çantamız | — |
| -nız | çantanız | — |
| -mda | çantamda | — |
| -sına | çantasına | n |
Examples
- Çantamı masaya koyuyorum.I am putting my bag on the table. The possessive comes first and the accusative last: çantam + ı = çantamı. After the consonant m no joining y is needed.
- Sınıfta bir çanta görüyorum.I see a bag in the classroom.A bag mentioned for the first time usually takes no accusative: bir çanta görüyorum. A known, specific bag does: çantayı görüyorum.
- Çantamda su ve ekmek var. There is water and bread in my bag.

Watch out
Do not put the case ending first. çantadam is wrong for 'in my bag': the possessive comes first and the case last, so it is çantamda. And after a vowel the possessive is just -m: çantam, not çantaım.
Try it yourself
Add 'my' to çanta (bag): my bag.
Show answer or example answer
çantam
çantam: after the vowel a the possessive for 'my' is only -m, so no extra vowel appears.
Add the accusative to çanta (bag): the bag as the object.
Show answer or example answer
çantayı
çantayı: the accusative -ı follows the back vowel a and needs a joining y because the word ends in a vowel.
Say 'in our bag': add 'our' and then the locative to çanta.
Show answer or example answer
çantamızda
çantamızda: the possessive -mız comes first, then the locative; z is voiced, so the ending is -da, not -ta.
Say 'to his or her bag': add 'his or her' and then the dative to çanta.
Show answer or example answer
çantasına
çantasına: the possessive -sı closes the stem, so the dative needs a joining n and becomes -na, not -ya.
