Use mühendis for an engineer of any gender. Here you will show someone a drawing, locate a key and say which engineers belong to your team. The table separates cases from possessive forms, even where their spelling is identical.

The idea

The last vowel of mühendis is i, so its forms include mühendisi, mühendisimiz and mühendisler, despite the earlier ü. The final s stays before a vowel; before the locative or ablative it gives mühendiste and mühendisten. To say “to our engineers”, build mühendislerimize: engineer + plural + our + to. The suffix pages explain the general patterns.

Watch out

Mühendisim can mean “my engineer” or “I am an engineer”: Ben mühendisim gives the speaker’s profession, while benim mühendisim names someone associated with the speaker. Likewise, mühendisimiz means “our engineer”, but mühendisiz means “we are engineers”; that extra im changes the meaning.

Try it yourself

  1. Complete: the engineer has the key today. Write only the missing form of mühendis.

    Show answer or example answer

    mühendiste

mühendiste: the key is with the engineer, so the sentence needs a location. The final voiceless s makes the ending -te; mühendisde is not the correct spelling.

  2. Complete: we know this engineer well. Write only the missing word.

    Show answer or example answer

    mühendisi

mühendisi: bu points to a particular engineer, who is the object of tanıyoruz. The accusative -i marks that specific person; the stem’s s does not change.

  3. Complete: we reserved the new desks for our engineers. Express “for our engineers” in one word.

    Show answer or example answer

    mühendislerimize

mühendislerimize: several engineers receive the desks, and they belong to our team. -ler supplies the plural, -imiz supplies “our”, and the final -e marks the recipients.

  4. Complete: I am an engineer. Write only the missing word.

    Show answer or example answer

    mühendisim

mühendisim: ben is the subject, so this is a statement of profession. “My engineer” would instead be benim mühendisim, a noun phrase with the possessive pronoun.

Use it today

Imagine a design team. Write who has a key, whom you are inviting to a meeting and what you are giving your engineers. Then write one sentence giving your own profession with mühendisim.
