Use mutfak to describe a kitchen as a place, a destination or something you clean. Then add an owner and keep track of which ending touches the stem.
The idea
With mutfak, the final a selects back-vowel endings. The stem keeps k in mutfaklar, mutfakta and mutfaktan, but becomes mutfağ- before a vowel: mutfağa, mutfağı, mutfağım. The form mutfağı can mark a specific object or mean his/her kitchen; the sentence tells you which.

Watch out
Do not carry the spelling of mutfağı into mutfakta: the location ending begins with a consonant, so k stays. In mutfağımızda, however, possession comes first: mutfağımız ends in z, so the location ending is -da, not -ta.
