Use restoran to describe a place to eat, recommend a particular restaurant and talk about the restaurant someone owns. You will choose forms from context rather than translate an English preposition on its own.

The idea

The stem restoran keeps its final n: restorana, restorandan, restoranım. Its last vowel is a, giving forms such as restoranlar and restoranımız. In Bu restoranı öneriyoruz, restoranı marks the specific object we recommend; in onun restoranı, the same written form means his or her restaurant. The surrounding words identify the job of the ending.

Watch out

To say “at his or her restaurant”, use onun restoranında: the possessive -ı is followed by a linking n before -da. Plain restoranda only says “at the restaurant”. Compare bizim restoranımızda, where no extra n is added after restoranımız.

restoranı: bu identifies the particular restaurant being recommended. Here -ı marks that definite object; it does not mean “his” or “her”.

  3. Complete with restoran: Our restaurant is small. Write only the missing word.

    Show answer or example answer

    restoranımız

restoranımız: bizim identifies the owners as “we”. The ending -ımız marks one restaurant belonging to us, not several restaurants.
