Use banyo to describe a room at home: say where the towels are, which room you clean and whose bathroom you mean. The separate expression banyo yapmak means to bathe.

The idea

The stem banyo stays intact: banyoya, banyoyu, banyonun. Its final o gives u in banyosu and banyomuz, but a in banyolar. Compare banyoyu (the bathroom as a specific object) with banyosu (his/her bathroom). A case after this third-person possessive needs n: banyosunda.

Watch out

Do not insert y after the possessive -su: “in his/her bathroom” is banyosunda, not banyosuyda. Also keep the room and the activity apart: banyoya gitmek is to go to the bathroom; banyo yapmak is to bathe.

Try it yourself

  1. Complete: We are cleaning the bathroom today.

    banyoyu

banyoyu: the room is the specific thing we clean, so it is the object. The joining y separates the final o from the accusative u.

  2. Complete: There is no window in his/her bathroom.

    banyosunda

banyosunda: onun identifies the owner. First form banyosu, then add n and -da to locate the missing window in that person’s bathroom.

  3. Complete: There are windows in our bathrooms.

    banyolarımızda

banyolarımızda: several bathrooms belong to us. The plural -lar comes before -ımız; its a explains the dotless ı. The final -da places the windows there.

  4. Complete: There are two bathrooms in this house.

    banyo

banyo: iki already gives the number, so the counted noun stays singular. Banyolar is the plural when no number precedes it.

Use it today

Describe a real or imaginary home in three sentences: count its bathrooms, say where the towels are and mention its bathroom with evin banyosu. Then add a sentence about bathing.
