Start with one polite sentence

Einen Kaffee, bitte. means “A coffee, please.” It is short, natural and enough to get started. For a fuller request, use Ich hätte gern einen Kaffee. (“I would like a coffee.”)

You may hear Was möchten Sie? (“What would you like?”) or Was darf es sein? (“What can I get you?”). You do not need to translate every word before answering. Recognising that it is your turn to order is enough.

A café conversation you can reuse

Speaker German English
Café owner Guten Morgen! Was möchten Sie? Good morning! What would you like?
You Einen Kaffee, bitte. A coffee, please.
Café owner Mit Milch? With milk?
You Ja, bitte. Yes, please.
Café owner Sonst noch etwas? Anything else?
You Nein, danke. No, thank you.

If you want black coffee, try Ohne Milch, bitte. (“Without milk, please.”) If you need a moment, say Einen Moment, bitte. It buys you time to read the menu and decide.

Why is it einen Kaffee?

The dictionary form is der Kaffee: Kaffee is masculine. In an order such as Ich möchte einen Kaffee, the coffee is the direct object. The masculine indefinite article changes from ein to einen in the accusative case.

The short version leaves out Ich möchte, but the form stays einen Kaffee. You can use this phrase comfortably before you have mastered every case. Learn the chunk first; use the grammar to understand the pattern when you are ready.

Compare these requests:

  • Einen Tee, bitte. — A tea, please. (der Tee)
  • Eine heiße Schokolade, bitte. — A hot chocolate, please. (die Schokolade)
  • Ein Wasser, bitte. — A water, please. (das Wasser)

Notice that the feminine and neuter indefinite articles do not change between nominative and accusative. Our German articles guide explains the starting forms.

Staying, taking away and paying

Hier oder zum Mitnehmen? asks whether you want to stay or take your order away. Answer Hier, bitte (“Here, please”) or Zum Mitnehmen, bitte (“To take away, please”).

To ask for the bill, say Die Rechnung, bitte. To ask about card payment, use Kann ich mit Karte bezahlen? (“Can I pay by card?”). You may hear Zusammen oder getrennt? (“Together or separately?”) when paying with another person.

The café’s payment process may differ: some take payment at the counter, others at the table. Let the situation guide you and ask when you are unsure. The language gives you options; it does not prescribe a single ritual.

Your turn at the counter

Order a tea to take away. Decline anything else. Ask whether you can pay by card. Try the three replies before opening the answer.

Change your order and ask for a repeat

Gast: Haben Sie auch Hafermilch?

Do you also have oat milk?

Café: Ja. Möchten Sie einen kleinen oder einen großen Kaffee?

Yes. Would you like a small or a large coffee?

Gast: Einen kleinen Kaffee mit Hafermilch, bitte.

A small coffee with oat milk, please.

Café: Zum Mitnehmen?

To take away?

Gast: Entschuldigung, können Sie das bitte wiederholen?

Excuse me, could you repeat that, please?

Café: Möchten Sie hier trinken oder den Kaffee mitnehmen?

Would you like to drink here or take the coffee away?

Gast: Ich möchte hier trinken. Was kostet das?

I would like to drink here. How much is that?

Café: Drei Euro fünfzig.

Three euros fifty.

Rehearse a different order

The price is invented for this practice dialogue. Cover the translation and order a large coffee without milk to take away. Then ask the server to repeat the price. One possible order is: Einen großen Kaffee ohne Milch zum Mitnehmen, bitte. Asking for repetition is part of a successful conversation; you do not need to guess what you heard.
