Practise the Japanese sounds し, ち and つ in familiar words, and distinguish a full-size つ from the small っ.

The idea

し is shi, ち is chi and つ is tsu in Hepburn. The first begins with friction; the other two begin with a brief closure and release into friction.

Watch out

Full-size つ has its own vowel; small っ lengthens the following consonant instead. Do not add a vowel between t and s in つ.
