A description of Topkapı Sarayı may move from rooms and courtyards to the work of government. At B2, follow that shift: identify whether a word names a place, a governing body or a person’s title. The reading below is an original learning text, not a historical quotation.

The idea

Use function and context to interpret heritage terms. Saray names a palace; Divan-ı Hümayun names the imperial council, while padişah is the ruler’s title. A place description can also use the council’s name for its meeting space. Yalnızca … değil, aynı zamanda … adds a second function without denying the first: Topkapı was a residence as well as a centre of government.

Read the text

Watch out

Do not automatically translate divan as a sofa. In a passage about officials discussing state affairs, it means a council. Nor does yalnızca bir konut değil mean that the palace was never a residence: yalnızca rejects the limitation to that one function.

Try it yourself

  1. In this history text, does divan mean a council (kurul) or a piece of seating furniture (oturma eşyası)? Write the Turkish answer.

    Show answer or example answer

    kurul

kurul: discussing state affairs requires a body of people. The clue is what they do, so the furniture meaning does not fit this passage.

  2. Write the Turkish title used for the Ottoman ruler.

    Show answer or example answer

    padişah

padişah: the question asks for the title of the Ottoman ruler. A palace is a place and the council is an institution; neither names that individual role.

  3. Complete the Turkish sentence: Topkapı Palace was not only a residence but also a centre of ___. Choose yönetim (government) or alışveriş (shopping).

    Show answer or example answer

    yönetim

yönetim: the missing word must account for the state business described in the reading. The sentence keeps the residential function and adds the administrative one.

  4. According to the reading, what was the name of the Imperial Council’s meeting place? Write its Turkish name.

    Show answer or example answer

    Kubbealtı

Kubbealtı: the reading names this as the council’s meeting place. The answer must identify where the institution met, rather than repeat the institution’s name.

Use it today

Write a four-sentence museum note in Turkish using only facts from the reading. Name a building, an institution and a ruler’s title; connect two functions with yalnızca … değil, aynı zamanda …. Explain which context clue rules out the furniture meaning of divan.
