Follow the founding period through a short historical reading: the Assembly opened in 1920, the republic was proclaimed in 1923, and new Turkish letters were adopted in 1928. Track the institution, person and event in each sentence.

The idea

Match the verb to the event: ilan etmek means to proclaim, seçmek to elect, and kabul etmek to adopt or approve in this context. An active sentence names the actor, as in Meclis ... kabul etti; the passive kabul edildi puts the adopted measure first. Read önce and sonra as time relations: sequence alone does not establish a cause.

Bir tarih metninde aynı paragrafta bir kurumun açılması, bir yönetim biçiminin ilanı ve bir kişinin seçilmesi anlatılabilir. Bunları tek bir olay gibi okumamak gerekir. Türkiye Büyük Millet Meclisi, 23 Nisan 1920'de Ankara'da açıldı. O tarihte cumhuriyet henüz ilan edilmemişti. Meclis, 29 Ekim 1923'te cumhuriyeti ilan etti ve Mustafa Kemal'i ilk cumhurbaşkanı seçti.

Watch out

Harf Devrimi refers to a change of writing system, not a switch from speaking Arabic to speaking Turkish. Turkish was written with an Arabic-based script before the reform; the new letters were Latin-based. Also keep adoption of a measure separate from its implementation: kabul edilmesi and uygulanması name different stages.

Try it yourself

  1. Complete the sentence: the republic was proclaimed on 29 October 1923. Choose ilan edildi or seçildi.

    Show answer or example answer

    ilan edildi

ilan edildi: the subject is the republic and the date identifies its proclamation. It is not a person standing for election, so seçildi does not fit.

  2. Complete the sentence about Mustafa Kemal becoming the first president that same day. Choose kabul edildi or seçildi.

    Show answer or example answer

    seçildi

seçildi: Mustafa Kemal is the person who took office after the Assembly's vote. Aynı gün refers back to 29 October 1923, not to the later alphabet reform.

  3. Complete the statement about the adoption of the new Turkish letters in 1928. Choose kabul edildi or açıldı.

    Show answer or example answer

    kabul edildi

kabul edildi: the subject is the new letters, whose adoption is being reported. Açıldı would describe an opening, such as the opening of the Assembly, not adoption of an alphabet.

  4. What changed in the alphabet reform: the language or the alphabet used to write Turkish? Choose dil or alfabe.

    Show answer or example answer

    alfabe

alfabe: the phrase yazmak için kullanılan points to the system used for writing. Choosing dil would wrongly suggest that a different language replaced Turkish.

Use it today

Write a three-sentence timeline using 1920, 1923 and 1928. Name the Assembly in one active sentence, then rewrite it in the passive. Explain what changed in 1928 without claiming that Turkish began that year.
