Use konu for the subject of a conversation, a lesson or a text. Here you will choose a topic, return to it and explain what a piece of writing is about.

The idea

The stem stays konu: konuyu is a specific topic as an object, konuya points to a topic, and konudan works in konudan söz etmek, “to talk about a topic”. Compare bu konuda, “on this matter”. Possession gives konum, konumuz and konusu; after the plural, the vowel changes in konularımız. The table collects this noun’s forms.

Watch out

Do not confuse konuyu with konusu. In yazının konusu, “the subject of the text”, konusu marks the relationship to the text. When you summarise that subject, it becomes the object yazının konusunu: keep -su and add -nu, not -yu.

Try it yourself

  1. Complete: we are choosing this topic for the meeting. Write only the missing form of konu.

    konuyu

konuyu: bu identifies the particular topic being chosen. The object ending follows the final vowel with a joining y; there is no owner here.

  2. Complete: the title of this topic is very long. Write only the missing word.

    Show answer or example answer

    konunun

konunun: the heading belongs to this topic, so the phrase needs the genitive. The final u stays, and -nun connects the topic to its heading.

  3. Complete: summarise the subject of the text in one sentence. Write only the missing word.

    Show answer or example answer

    konusunu

konusunu: the text already has a subject, expressed by konusu. Summarising acts on that subject, so the possessive form also needs the accusative with n.

  4. Complete: our topics are different this week. Use the plural possessive form of konu.

    Show answer or example answer

    konularımız

konularımız: bizim identifies us as the owners, and the prompt asks for several topics. Add the plural first; its a gives the following possessive vowel ı.

Choose two topics for a short discussion. Write one sentence with konuya, one with konudan and one naming the subject of a text with yazının konusu.
