You will add plural, possessive and case endings to peynir and decide whether a cheese you eat needs the accusative.

The idea

peynir never changes inside: it ends in r and its last vowel is i, so every ending is a front-vowel one: peynirler, peynirim, peynire, peynirde, peynirden, peynirin. A particular cheese as object takes -i: Peyniri aldım. Cheese in general stays bare: Peynir aldım.

Watch out

Do not put -i on every object. Peynir yiyorum says that you eat cheese in general; Peyniri yiyorum means a particular cheese that is already known. Also, peyniri can mean his or her cheese, and the sentence decides. The last vowel is i, so never peynıre or peynirlar.

Try it yourself

  1. Add the accusative to peynir (cheese): the cheese, a particular one.

    Show answer or example answer

    peyniri

peyniri: the cheese is a particular one, and the last vowel i gives -i directly after r.

  2. Add the dative to peynir (cheese): to the cheese.

    Show answer or example answer

    peynire

peynire: movement towards the cheese uses the dative, and the front vowel i gives -e.

  3. Add 'my' to peynir (cheese): my cheese.

    Show answer or example answer

    peynirim

peynirim: r is a consonant, so -im joins without a buffer letter, with the front vowel i.

  4. I would like a slice of cheese. Do not add an ending.

    Show answer or example answer

    peynir

peynir: after bir dilim the word names the food in general, so it takes no ending.
