You will conjugate gelmek (to come) in the present continuous, past and future and say where and when someone comes.

The idea

The stem gel- is regular and never changes: geliyorum, geldim, geleceğim. After the front vowel e come -iyor, -di and -ecek. Only the k of -ecek becomes ğ, before a person ending that starts with a vowel: gelecek, geleceksin, but geleceğim, geleceğiz.

Watch out

The k does not stay before a vowel: gelecekim is wrong, it is geleceğim. Before a consonant it does stay: geleceksin, geleceksiniz, not geleceğsin.

Try it yourself

  1. Future tense: I will come tomorrow.

    Show answer or example answer

    geleceğim

geleceğim: the k of -ecek becomes ğ because the ending -im starts with a vowel.

  2. Future tense: You (all) will come tomorrow.

    Show answer or example answer

    geleceksiniz

geleceksiniz: -siniz starts with a consonant, so the k of -ecek stays.

  3. Present continuous: We are coming now.

    Show answer or example answer

    geliyoruz

geliyoruz: the stem gel- does not change; the front vowel gives -iyor, then -uz for "we".

  4. Negative past: Ali did not come to school yesterday.

    Show answer or example answer

    gelmedi

gelmedi: the negative -me- sits between the stem and -di; the third person has no person ending.

Use it today

Write three sentences about your week with gelmek, one in each tense, and in each future form check whether the ending starts with a vowel.
