Use kullanmak for tools, devices, materials and methods. With araba, it means driving. Start with the forms table, then say what you use now, used yesterday or will use tomorrow.

The idea

The stem kullan- stays unchanged: kullanıyorum, kullandım, kullanırım. The future is kullanacağım, and the negative present is kullanmıyorum. A specific object takes the accusative: bu tableti kullanmak. A general object can remain bare: kurşun kalem kullanmak. The aorist describes habits, but the present continuous can also describe a current routine. The table gives plural forms with onlar; singular verb forms are also possible.

Read-aloud uses a synthetic Turkish voice available on your device. Voice quality and availability vary; it does not assess your pronunciation.

Watch out

Araba kullanmak means to drive a car, not merely to travel in one. A passenger can say arabayla gitmek. Also keep the final n of the stem: kullanıyorum, not kullayıyorum.

Try it yourself

  1. Complete with the present continuous for “I”: I am using this computer right now.

    Show answer or example answer

    kullanıyorum

kullanıyorum: the action is happening right now, so the prompt calls for -ıyor. The final a in kullan- gives dotless ı; -um identifies the speaker.

  2. Use the future for “I”: I will use the new scissors tomorrow.

    kullanacağım

kullanacağım: tomorrow’s action needs the requested future form. Adding the first-person ending to kullanacak changes its k to ğ; the stem’s n stays.

  3. Add the object ending to tablet: I use this tablet every day.

    tableti

tableti: bu identifies a particular tablet, so it is a definite object. Add -i after the final e; the t remains. Tablete would mean “to the tablet”.

  4. Use the aorist for “I”: I generally use a pencil when drawing.

    Show answer or example answer

    kullanırım

kullanırım: the exercise asks for the aorist to express a habitual choice. This verb takes -ır, not -ar, followed by -ım for “I”.

Use it today

Write about one device you use, one method you used yesterday and one tool you will use tomorrow. Mark each specific object. Then practise the forms before moving on to denemek.
