You will show a person an object, describe what a map or screen indicates, and ask politely to see something. Use the table to change the person and tense.

The idea

Göstermek takes the person you show something to in the dative and a specific thing shown in the accusative: bana kitabı göster (show me the book). The stem göster- stays intact; its last vowel is e, giving gösteriyorum, gösterdim and gösterir. The future includes göstereceğim and göstereceğiz. For a direct instruction use göster; for a polite request use gösterir misiniz?. A map can also show the way, and a screen can display the time.

Watch out

Beni göster means “show me” as in “point me out”; it does not ask someone to show an object to you. For that, use bana: bana kitabı göster. Also keep görmek (see) distinct from göstermek (show): seeing a picture is different from showing it to another person.

Try it yourself

  1. Ben şimdi size yolu ___. Complete with göstermek in the present continuous: I am showing you the way.

    Show answer or example answer

    gösteriyorum

gösteriyorum: ben requires the first-person form, while şimdi places the action in progress now. The last vowel of the stem is e, so the form starts gösteri-, not gösterü-.

  2. Biz yarın size atölyeyi ___. Use the future of göstermek: we will show you the workshop tomorrow.

    Show answer or example answer

    göstereceğiz

göstereceğiz: biz calls for the plural “we” ending. Before that vowel-initial ending, the k of gösterecek becomes ğ.

  3. ___ bu fotoğrafı göster. Put ben in the right case: show this photo to me.

    Show answer or example answer

    bana

bana: the speaker is the person who is to see the photo; the photo itself is already the object, bu fotoğrafı. Using beni would assign the speaker the wrong role.

  4. Bana menüyü ___? Make a polite request with göstermek, the aorist and siz: could you show me the menu?

    Show answer or example answer

    gösterir misiniz

gösterir misiniz: the aorist question makes the request courteous. Write mi apart from the verb and attach the siz ending to it: misiniz.

Use it today

Choose an object in the room. Ask politely to see it, then write who showed it to whom yesterday and who will show it tomorrow. Next, practise göndermek to describe sending it.
