Trying a pen tests how it writes; trying a method tests whether it works. Use denemek for both, and for trying on clothes. The verb reports a trial, without promising success.
The idea
Denemek takes a direct object: bu kalemi denemek. To try an action, use the verbal noun in the accusative: açmayı denemek, yüzmeyi denemek. Its stem is dene-; compare deniyorum, denedim, deneyeceğim and the aorist denerim. The final e narrows in the continuous form but stays before the future linking y. Subject pronouns can be left out.
| Person | Present continuous | Past | Future | Aorist |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ben | deniyorum | denedim | deneyeceğim | denerim |
| sen | deniyorsun | denedin | deneyeceksin | denersin |
| o | deniyor | denedi | deneyecek | dener |
| biz | deniyoruz | denedik | deneyeceğiz | deneriz |
| siz | deniyorsunuz | denediniz | deneyeceksiniz | denersiniz |
| onlar | deniyorlar | denediler | deneyecekler | denerler |

Watch out
Do not transfer the bare infinitive pattern of denemek istiyorum to the action being tried. “Try opening it” needs açmayı dene, not açmak dene. The two verbs select different complements.
Try it yourself
Complete with “I am trying out” in the present continuous.

deniyorum
deniyorum: şu an places the trial in progress now; ben requires the first-person ending. The stem’s last vowel narrows to i before -yor.

deneyeceğim
deneyeceğim: yarın and the requested future form point ahead. The linking y follows dene-; the future ending’s k becomes ğ before the first-person vowel.
