Bleiben describes staying somewhere or continuing in a state, even though its Perfekt uses sein.

The idea
Learn blieb and ist geblieben alongside expressions such as zu Hause bleiben and offen bleiben. A location is not a destination: stay zu Hause, go nach Hause.

Watch out
Bleiben uses sein in Perfekt despite not expressing travel: Wir sind geblieben. Distinguish the location zu Hause from the destination nach Hause.
Try it yourself
Ich bleibe ___ Hause. (zu / nach)
Show answer or example answer
zu
Answer: “zu”. This describes an existing location, not entry into a new position.
Wir sind in Berlin ___.
Show answer or example answer
geblieben
Answer: “geblieben”. The auxiliary already carries the tense and person; the final verb needs its past participle.
Die Fenster ___ geschlossen. (bleiben / bleibt)
Show answer or example answer
bleiben
Answer: “bleiben”. The present-tense ending must match the subject’s person and number.
