年 counts years; 年間 makes the length of a period explicit.

The idea

Put a number before 年 or 年間: 一年（いちねん） and 二年間（にねんかん） can both express duration. 四年 is よねん. 何年 or 何年間 asks how many years.

Watch out

三年間 describes a three-year span; 三年前 points to a time three years ago. A calendar year such as 2026年 names a year, not necessarily a duration.
