Kültür means culture. Use it to discuss a local culture, compare several cultures or describe food culture. The examples show how the same noun changes when it is an object, a source or part of a compound.

The idea

The stem kültür stays unchanged: kültürü, kültüre, kültürde, kültürden. Its final ü gives kültürüm and kültürümüz, but the plural introduces e: kültürlerimiz. In yemek kültürü (food culture), the final -ü marks the noun compound; when the whole phrase is a specific object, use yemek kültürünü.

Watch out

Do not treat every kültürü as an accusative. In Bu kültürü tanıyoruz, it marks the object; in yemek kültürü, it completes the compound. To make that compound an object, keep its ending and add -nü: Yemek kültürünü araştırıyoruz.

Try it yourself

  1. Complete with kültür: we want to get to know this culture closely.

    Show answer or example answer

    kültürü

kültürü: bu points to a particular culture, and that culture is what we want to get to know. The direct object therefore needs the accusative -ü; no owner is mentioned.

  2. Complete with kültür: we are interested in a different culture.

    Show answer or example answer

    kültüre

kültüre: ilgi duymak directs interest towards something and takes the dative. The different culture is the target of that interest, so use -e.

  3. Complete with kültür: we are researching the food culture of this region.

    Show answer or example answer

    kültürünü

kültürünü: the thing being researched is the whole compound yemek kültürü. Retain its final -ü and add the accusative through linking n; bare kültürü would leave the object marking incomplete here.

  4. Write “our cultures” as one word using kültür.

    Show answer or example answer

    kültürlerimiz

kültürlerimiz: more than one culture calls for -ler, and “our” adds -imiz. Its vowel follows the e in the plural ending, not the earlier ü of the stem.

Use it today

Write a short description of an imaginary exhibition. Include one specific culture as an object, several cultures with kültürler and a sentence about food culture using yemek kültürünü.
