You will learn the forms of the word su (water) and say my water, the colour of the water, in the water and from the water.

The idea

su ends in a vowel, so an ending that starts with a vowel needs a y before it: suya, suyu, suyum. An ending that starts with a consonant attaches directly: sular, suda, sudan. Two forms break the pattern of other vowel-final nouns: the genitive is suyun (where araba gives arabanın) and the third-person possessive is suyu (where araba gives arabası).

Watch out

Do not build these forms by the general rule: sunun and susu do not exist. Also, suyu does more than one job: it is the accusative (Suyu içiyorum, I drink the water) and the possessive (Ali'nin suyu, Ali's water). In the same way suyun means both 'of the water' and 'your water'. The sentence decides.

Try it yourself

  1. Make su (water) mean 'my water': my water has run out.

    suyum

suyum: su ends in a vowel and -um starts with one, so a y goes between them: su + y + um.

  2. Give su (water) the ending for 'his': Ali's water is cold.

    suyu

suyu: after Ali'nin the word needs the third-person possessive. For su it is -yu; susu does not exist.

  3. Give su (water) the genitive: the colour of the water is blue.

    Show answer or example answer

    suyun

suyun: the genitive of su takes -yun. Unlike arabanın, no linking n appears.

  4. Add the ablative to su (water): the fish came out of the water.

    Show answer or example answer

    sudan

sudan: -dan starts with a consonant, so there is no y. The d follows the vowel u, and the back vowel gives -dan.

Use it today

Write three sentences about water: one with the accusative, one with a possessive and one with -dan. Mark every y and check that the ending starts with a vowel.
