You will build the main forms of ev, house or home, and tell evi, evin and evinde apart.
The idea
ev ends in v, which never changes, and its last vowel e is front, so every ending uses its front shape: evler, evde, evden, eve, evim, evimiz. Two details to remember: the accusative and the third-person possessive are the same form evi, and evin is both the genitive and 'your house'. Without a possessive, eve, evde and evden mean 'home' as a place: to home, at home, from home.
| Stem | Ending | Form |
|---|---|---|
| ev | -ler | evler |
| ev | -de | evde |
| ev | -den | evden |
| ev | -e | eve |
| ev | -i | evi |
| ev | -in | evin |
| ev | -im | evim |
| ev | -imiz | evimiz |
| ev | -i + -n + -de | evinde |
| ev | -ler + -imiz + -den | evlerimizden |
Examples
- Babam bugün evde değil.My father is not at home today.
- Yarın eve gidiyoruz. We are going home tomorrow.Without a possessive, eve means 'home' rather than 'to the building': you are going to your own place.
- Sabah evi temizledim.I cleaned the house in the morning.Evi is the accusative, the definite object. As a subject the same shape means his or her house: Evi büyük.
- Evin kapısı mavi. The door of the house is blue. The genitive -in on the owner goes with -sı on the thing owned: evin kapısı. The same evin also means 'your house'.

Watch out
After the possessive -i a case ending joins only through the buffer n: 'in his or her house' is evinde, never evide. So 'I saw his house' is Evini gördüm, while Evi gördüm means 'I saw the house'.
Try it yourself
Add the locative to ev: my mother is at home.
Show answer or example answer
evde
evde: ev ends in the voiced v, which stays, and the last vowel e is front, so the ending is -de; with no possessive it already means 'at home'.
Add the dative to ev: I am going home from school.
Show answer or example answer
eve
eve: movement towards needs the dative -e after a front vowel; the bare ev stands here for one's own home, so 'home'.
Add the possessive to ev: our house is near the school.
Show answer or example answer
evimiz
evimiz: the ending for 'our' is -imiz because the last vowel e is front, and it attaches straight to the consonant v.
Add the possessive and the locative to ev: there is a cat in his house.
Show answer or example answer
evinde
evinde: after the possessive -i the buffer n comes before the case ending, and then -de.
